STORY
Euphorbia pulcherrima, or Poinsettia, is endemic to México and Central America. In Spanish, it is known as “Noche Buena.” The Aztecs cultivated it for use in traditional medicine.
The cuetlaxóchitl (kwe-tla-so-cheetl), “the flower that withers,” witnessed the demise of Chontal warriors in a battle against the Mexicas in Tlachco.
The tragedy caused the flower to wither, but it bloomed a deep red the following winter, honoring the decimated warriors.
